Blow-down calibration of a large ultrasonic flow meter

Oil and gas production industries use large (diameter > 0.8 m) ultrasonic flow meters (USMs) to measure exhaust from flare stacks, emissions smokestacks, of natural gas, etc. Since most laboratories do not have compressors with sufficient capacity (>10 kg/s) calibrate meters, calibrations are performed using the blow-down method where is generated by discharging high pressure tanks, leading significant transients. We used an array critical venturis (CFVs) in a facility (D = 89.5 cm) 8-path meter. The transients associated process caused spatial temporal variations temperature that dominated (40%–67%) uncertainty budget. Our analysis accounts for transient-generated uncertainties provides guidelines improving meters.
